Reading Workshop: The Five-Finger Rule

We have been talking about "just right books" this week in our Reading Workshop.  We also talked about the 5-finger rule.  Ask your child what the five-finger rule is at home!  With the five finger rule, your child can determine within reading just a couple pages of a book if it is too easy, too hard, or just right. Every time your child comes to a words that "challenges" them, or they struggle with, they put up a finger.  If your child holds up 0-2 fingers, the book is too easy, if they hold up 3-5 fingers, it is just right, and if your child holds up enough fingers to start on their other hand (6 or more) the book is too hard.  The book must also be one they enjoy reading in order to be a just right book.  I caught some of our friends practicing the "five-finger rule" while reading today.  See if you can see who was practicing!
Genavieve has two fingers up...must be too easy.

Don't they look cozy and comfortable?

Hmm?? Gabbi has 10 fingers up....must be too hard.

Two fingers for Zachary= too easy!

I love how Ethan is tracking the words with his finger.
